Abstract: Podcasting has become an increasingly popular form of instruction within higher education; however, little empirical research has been conducted on its effectiveness. The purpose of this research is to determine if podcasts are an effective learning tool for higher education students. This study focuses on the type of content instructional podcasts present and the pedagogies used within those podcasts. In addition, we investigate students' beliefs concerning characteristics of effective instructional podcasts and the type of content for which podcasts should be used. We analyze the results of a content analysis and student surveys to determine the effectiveness of instructional podcasts as a learning tool in higher education and to determine further research needs.
