Abstract:Using digital technology with struggling readers is fast becoming a method to keep readers engaged. During the Fall, 2011 semester, pre-service teacher candidates tutored struggling readers using their laptops and an iPad. All iPad applications and websites used during the tutoring were categorized into the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency in order to share with other teachers. The pre-service teachers discovered that their students were more engaged during the tutoring sessions when digital technology was used in some way.
