Abstract: Increasingly, teachers across the world are expected to not only provide their students with basic skills, but also with the skills they will need to be successful in a rapidly changing, knowledgebased global society. Both developing and developed countries are faced with the challenge of preparing a new generation of teachers with 21st Century skills while upgrading the skills of the existing teacher force to achieve this goal. E-learning is increasingly used across the globe as an important means of providing educators with access to rich learning resources and with new opportunities for professional development. This presentation will discuss the opportunities and challenges in the use of e-learning for teacher development and the emerging trends and issues in the use of: Open educational resources for teacher development; Online educator professional development and degree programs; Online communities of practice. Also discussed will be examples of strategies used by higher education institutions and government agencies to develop and use e-learning for teacher development. The presentation will include content from the new UNESCO book, Teacher Development in an E-Learning Age, edited by Dr.Paul Resta. |
